Turkey’s aviation platforms gain attention across African nations
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is among the leading suppliers showcasing its products at the Egypt Defense Expo (EDEX) 2025, held from Dec. 1–4 in Cairo.
Currently, TAI is engaged in active negotiations with around 90 countries, with roughly 40 African nations—including Egypt—playing a central role in promoting and marketing its homegrown air platforms. Over the past five years, the company has signed 14 separate contracts with seven African countries, some of which have already been delivered, while others are slated for upcoming shipments.
TAI’s air platforms are designed for a lifecycle of approximately 25 years, and the company’s footprint in Africa is expected to endure as long as the service life of its products. The firm made its initial African delivery to Tunisia in 2022.
All of TAI’s mass-produced air platforms are currently operational in African countries. These include the TAI Atak twin-engine helicopter, the Hurkus basic training aircraft, and the Anka and Aksungur unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Platforms such as Hurjet, Göbekey, and Anka III have been inducted into the Turkish Air Force, gaining real-world operational experience that further bolsters their credibility and marketability in Africa.
TAI’s diverse product line—from basic training aircraft to next-generation platforms—is designed to meet the varied needs of African security forces. Turkish defense offerings are in high demand across the continent due to their sustainability, cost efficiency, quality of service, and other competitive advantages.
Alongside TAI, Turkish defense company Baykar has also expanded its presence in Africa. Together, the two firms have established air platform operations in 25 African countries, reflecting Türkiye’s growing influence in the region’s defense sector.
